Use case: aging and dementia research

Cognitive tests for aging and dementia studies

Run trail making, word-list learning, story recall, fluency, clock drawing and reaction-time tests in the browser, scored automatically, with age-band percentiles where a published norm exists.

These tests support research. They do not diagnose dementia.

Each card links to the test's page, with its procedure, scores and references.

Processing speed

Trail Making Test A

Measures processing speed and visual scanning by asking participants to connect numbered circles in ascending order as quickly as possible.

2-3 min · timed

Executive function

Trail Making Test B

Measures executive function and cognitive flexibility by asking participants to alternate between numbers and letters (1-A-2-B-3-C...).

3-5 min · timed

Processing speed

Symbol Coding

Measures processing speed and visual-motor mapping by requiring rapid symbol-to-key matching under time pressure.

4-5 min · timed

Working memory

Digit Span Test

Measures verbal working memory capacity by asking participants to recall sequences of digits in forward and backward order.

5-7 min · untimed

Working memory

Corsi Block-Tapping Test

Measures visuospatial short-term and working memory by asking participants to reproduce sequences across a fixed nine-block layout.

5-8 min · untimed

Episodic memory

Paired Associate Learning

Measures visuospatial episodic memory by asking participants to learn and recall the locations of patterns hidden in boxes on a grid.

6-8 min · untimed

Episodic memory

Verbal Learning

Measures list-learning across repeated study and recall trials, followed by recognition questions in the participant language.

6-8 min · untimed

Episodic memory

Delayed Recall Module

Measures delayed verbal recall and retention after an encoded word list and delay interval.

6-10 min · untimed

Episodic memory

Short Story Recall

Measures verbal episodic memory with a brief narrative, free recall, and recognition questions in the participant language.

4-6 min · untimed

Episodic memory

Recognition Memory Test

Measures episodic recognition by asking participants to identify studied words among matched new words.

5-7 min · timed

Episodic memory

Category Fluency

Measures semantic category fluency. Participants type as many animals, and then fruits and vegetables, as they can, with 60 seconds per category by default.

3-5 min · untimed

Executive function

Verbal Fluency

Measures letter fluency. Participants type as many words as they can that start with F, A and S, with 60 seconds per letter by default.

4-6 min · untimed

Executive function

Clock Drawing Task

Captures command and optional copy clock drawings as timestamped browser-native strokes for reproducible process analysis.

3-6 min · untimed

Processing speed

Simple Reaction Time

Measures basic processing speed by asking participants to respond as quickly as possible when a stimulus appears on screen.

2-3 min · timed

Attention

Choice Reaction Time

Measures attention and decision speed by requiring participants to select the correct response based on which stimulus appears.

3-4 min · timed

A starter template for older adults

The study wizard's Older Adult Executive Speed Battery runs Digit Span Test, Trail Making Test A, Trail Making Test B and Symbol Coding in about 24 minutes. Start from it and add or remove tests.

Percentiles by age

The ages each published norm covers. A percentile appears only when the participant's age band is covered and the session meets the other norm conditions.

How percentiles work and when they appear: test norms.

What older participants see

Larger text

The older-adult setting enlarges the text on the consent, question, start and finish pages. Test screens keep their standard size.

Instructions first

Each test opens with its own instructions on screen before the scored trials.

A laptop or desktop

Timed tests need a mouse or trackpad. Clock Drawing's standard settings need a touchscreen or stylus.

In clinic or at home

Each participant gets a private link. Send it for testing at home, or open it on a study computer during a clinic visit. Participant data is stored in the United States; the US clinical research page covers hosting, consent and audit events for review boards.

Repeat testing

Run each visit as its own study with the same participant IDs. The two-study comparison export matches participants by ID and test, with each score at both timepoints and the change between them.

Questions about aging studies

Do these tests diagnose dementia?

No. ConductCognition is for research use only. The tests measure performance for a study; they are not a clinical assessment of any participant.

Which tests report percentiles for people over 70?

Simple Reaction Time, Choice Reaction Time, Eriksen Flanker Task, Stroop Color-Word Test, Digit Span Test, Trail Making Test A, Trail Making Test B and Paired Associate Learning have published norms for ages 70 to 79, and Eriksen Flanker Task, Stroop Color-Word Test, Trail Making Test A, Trail Making Test B and Paired Associate Learning also for 80 and over. Percentiles appear on paid plans and in pay-as-you-go studies when the session meets the norm conditions.

Can older participants use a tablet?

Yes, for untimed tests: 17 untimed tests run on tablets. Timed tests need a desktop or laptop with a mouse or trackpad. Clock Drawing's standard settings need a touchscreen or stylus, so a tablet suits it well.

Is there a larger-text option?

Yes. The older-adult setting enlarges the text on the consent, question, start and finish pages. The test screens keep their standard size.

How do we compare two visits?

Run each visit as its own study with the same participant IDs. The two-study comparison export matches participants by ID and test and gives each score at both timepoints and the change between them.
